Librarians And Overdue Books

How's your school's librarian?  We have a couple of ladies up on the second floor who are very much on top of their game, especially when it comes to overdue books.

I quickly discovered on Wednesday afternoon that, what ever you do, never forget to return your library books on time or you'll end up in big trouble with the school librarian.

Big trouble comes in the form of an official letter.  And notices come quick too, as in the same day.

I received Christopher's late notice Wednesday afternoon, for books that were only past due a few hours!  See, I told you they're on top of it.

The teaching assistance came running out of Christopher's classroom, chasing me down to deliver the note.

"This belongs to Christopher," she said, handed me a sheet of paper.

So this morning, the very first thing Christopher and I did after stepping foot on campus was to return those books, pronto, baby!!

I wasn't the only parent who'd had a lapse in memory; another mother was busy returning her child's books too.

"Sorry for being late," I said, as I gave the books back to the lady behind the counter.  "Hope you won't hang me by my toe nails for this little infraction," I jokingly remarked.

Smiling, she replied, "Oh no, that comes after the second reminder."

To this day, I can still picture our school librarian.  A tall, lanky fellow, with chestnut colored hair.  He wore expensive looking glasses which, sat precariously on the tip of his nose.  Most of us were scared to death of him.  We'd all heard horror stories about what he'd do to people with overdue books.

Once, our third grade class received a visit from him, and this guy lectured us for ten minutes on the importance of returning library books on time.  Needless to say, very few of us ever forgot to bring our books back on time.  Because if you did, Mr. Librarian turned into Mr. Evil instantaneously.

There was one child who hadn't returned an overdue book from the beginning of school.  The parents were summoned, and were given an earful by the librarian.  The very next day, the book came back.

Wow, really? I find that a little over the top, after all they should be encouraging children to enjoy going to the library and not frighten them.
